Yesterday I had my first vaccination appointment. After some mysterious system generated cancellations, at last it was my turn. It is indeed a monumental task to vaccinate any population, and I’m grateful for the NHS in the UK for their tireless work and rolling out this operation for all.
The appointment went smoothly, from arriving at the centre to the pre-jab chat and the actual pinprick like inoculation, it all went well without a fuss, the friendly staff made it so easy.
Today though I woke up “with a bang” at 5am with a headache, heavy and achy legs, a slightly sore arm and a general tiredness. All expected and common side effects. I was told younger people are more likely to react to the vaccine. But I have heard many friends across different age groups had some side effects, of various degrees of tolerance. The reactions that I experience now, are the body’s natural defence system to fight off the “invader”, thus the antibodies go into overdrive resulting in the aches and tiredness. On the other hand, it is actually a good sign that my immune system is working for me! Hopefully after a day or so I will be right as rain.
Still I was very grateful for the global efforts in bringing the vaccines forward and I benefited from it without any lengthy delay. My thanks also go to the staff at the centres, from arrival to leaving the building, everyone was friendly and helpful. Can you image just how much dedication and patience they have in saying the same things to each person coming through, talk about broken records….
I did make an outing with this appointment by having a takeaway lunch. But it wasn’t the best weather for it as it was so gusty and cold! Try imagining me wrapped up in a cosy coat, holding on to the cutlery, a box full of lunch with salad leaves (!), a napkin and a paper carrier bag under my feet. The food turned stone cold in no time, and honestly so was I. It felt like a Mr Beans adventure. Well, it was either that or take it home to eat, which I couldn’t wait! Still, if it wasn’t for this extreme alfresco dining, I wouldn’t be making you laugh now.
Extreme times call for extreme measures, every little thing is a thrill these days!
PS Two more members of my family have since had their first jab as well, and no side effects! It goes to show that despite the common side effects, not everyone experiences them or to the same extent. Hope we all sail through the second appointment.
